Following 4th of July protests, the Christopher Columbus monument (originally unveiled by Ronald Regan) was toppled and rolled into the the Inner Harbor amidst celebration.

It was recovered, in pieces, from the harbor two days later by the efforts of private companies Specialty Underwater Services and Iacoboni Site Specialists, the operation included both cranes and divers. This effort was funded by Italian American groups and notably John Pica, a former state senator and an Italian-American from Baltimore.
